Snickers Meme

A happy Saturday to you all, my wonderful followers (and quite possibly still a Friday for some of you)!

I made this meme a little while ago, after I was inspired by a comment someone left on a Facebook post (one of those things you end up finding after clicking on something, then clicking on a link from there, and then another link).

This can only be appreciated at its fullest if you’ve watched BBC’s Sherlock, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and seen one or more of Snickers’ “you’re not you when you’re hungry” ad campaigns.

Enjoy!

Continued to be inspired by life, love, and laughter fellow story-lovers! And have a great day!

Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

2014’s line-up of cinematic entertainment looks pretty darn awesome in my opinion. With highly anticipated sequels, intriguing remakes, and adaptions from some of the top best-sellers in the book industry, what’s not to get excited about!

Now, I’ve come in a little late as far as putting up my list of top 10 most anticipated movies to check out this year (it’s already March – yikes!), so I’ve already missed a few great choices that have screened during the past two months. But, hey – I find this topic very interesting, so as far as I’m concerned, March is not too late to jump in and pipe up with my top interests for a great cinema experience throughout the year.

NOTE: This list is just my personal top 10 movies I’m looking forward to this year. Yours is likely very different. Or maybe it’s not. Either way, it’s kinda fun to gauge what others are looking forward to movie-wise. Also, this list is in no particular order of preference. I’m looking forward to seeing all these movies, and while there are some I’m more excited about than others, I won’t make a point of setting them in any kind of order.

movie poster 5How to Train Your Dragon 2

I LOVED the first movie. To this day, it’s one of my all-time favourite movies. And since then, I have been excitedly awaiting the release of the second. How long has it been since the first one – four years? That’s a long time to wait for a sequel – but I’m pretty confident the wait will be well worth it. Bring on the return of Hiccup and Toothless!

movie poster 4X-Men: Days of Future Past

I grew up with a general familiarity of the X-Men, even though I never read the comics. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two X-Men movies. Not so much the third, but that did not deter me from seeing X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine (both really cool), and of course X-Men: First Class (which I really, really enjoyed). Since I’ve been following the X-Men from the beginning, when I saw the teaser trailer for this latest instalment, needless to say I became super excited. I can’t wait to see this!

movie poster 13Godzilla

Again, I grew up being familiar with this iconic King of the Monsters. As a kid, I watched some of the original movies (I can’t remember which ones), and I even owned Godzilla toys. When the 1998 re-make came out, I was very excited. And now that a new re-make has emerged – looking more awesome than ever – I am once again on the rollercoaster of anticipation. This movie is no doubt going to look AMAZING on the big-screen!

movie poster 2Mockingjay: Part 1

I have read the books (which are fantastic), and so far I’ve been very impressed by the movie adaptions. They’ve done a great job of transitioning the story from book to movie (which some people fail to understand are two completely different creatures), and I’ve been able to enjoy and appreciate both versions. It’s a given I want to see this at the cinemas – and I’m intrigued as to how they managed to break the final book into ‘two’ parts. Time to take on the Capitol!

movie poster 6Noah

The moment I saw the trailer, I wanted to see this. A sombre and gritty re-telling of one of the most famous biblical stories known. I don’t care about the huffing and puffing some people are making about this movie. If you’re offended or whatever, don’t go see it – simple as that. As for me, I am looking forward to watching it!

movie poster 7Maleficent

As a child, I loved Sleeping Beauty (the Disney rendition of the classic Brothers Grimm tale, of course). It’s such an old animation, but one of Disney’s great classics, so the fact that they are doing a re-telling of the tale with the focal point centred on the villain instead of the heroes, has me all jittery with anticipation. Maleficent is also one of my favourite Disney villains – always has been (she can turn into a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon for goodness sake!), so I’m really looking forward to seeing how they weave the origins of her disgruntlement against Aurora in this new movie. Oh, and Angelia looks amazing!

poster 8Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

I was unexpectedly blown away by  the first movie (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). It was extraordinarily absorbing and well-done in every aspect (in my opinion). When I heard they were continuing the story, I fist-pumped the air several times. Really looking forward to seeing where this movie goes. How AMAZING does the CGI look!

movie poster .9Edge of Tomorrow

The premise of this story sounds really interesting! Sci-fi setting, war against aliens, characters caught in a time loop – it’s enough to make any sci-fi fan prick their ears in sudden interest. For me, Tom Cruise is a hit-and-miss actor when it comes to movies. But I was super impressed with him in Oblivion, and he looks set to make another great performance in this new sci-fi film.

movie poster 9Guardians of the Galaxy

Okay, I don’t really know all that much about this movie. I’m not familiar with any of the characters or the original comic stories. But it sounds really cool! Fantasy/ sci-fi setting, misfit alien characters, saving the galaxy – sounds super geeky when you put it like that, but hey, geeky is the new cool, right? Well I think so (but I may be kinda biased since I’m a geek, myself). I’ve enjoyed all the marvel movies so far, so I should think this one won’t be any less fun, adventurous, and entertaining.

I couldn't find an official movie poster for There and Back Again, so this picture will have to suffice.

I couldn’t find an official movie poster for There and Back Again, so this picture will have to suffice.

The Hobbit: Battle of the 5 Armies

Needs no explaining. I grew up with Tolkien’s stories. I fell in love with fantasy because of tales like The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. I’ve loved all of Peter Jackson’s movie adaptions. On par with How to Train Your Dragon 2, Battle of the Five Armies is my most anticipated movie for 2014.

So, how about you? Which movies would you put on your top ten for 2014 cinema releases? Would any from my list make it onto yours? Feel free to leave a comment and put down your favourite picks for this year!

Living Inside a Frame

Have you ever heard the analogy that life is like a blank canvas? And you, the painter, equipped with all the colours and brushes of your own unique traits and abilities, are able to paint on the canvas whatever you wish.

Some see their tools as insufficient for the idea growing in their hearts. Don’t focus on the lack. Use what you have now until something better comes along. The longer you hesitate, the less time you have to put colours down on your canvas.

Some glance from their canvas to look at others, and in doing so, consider their present creation inconsequential. Don’t compare yourself to others. No one can paint on your canvas but you.

The examples of these metaphors are numerous, but there is only one I wish to focus on today. And that is the canvas in the frame.

Some people find that their circumstances or positions have set before them a blank canvas already inside a frame. Life is stretched out before you already pre-determined in ways which you may see as out of your control. Family expectations, cultural regulations, workplace status, financial restrictions – whatever the guise, to you it is as it is. A frame. A limitation. A cage.

Kyoya Ootori, one of the primary characters from the romantic comedy anime, Ouran High School Host Club, has the perfect example of a life already set inside a frame. Kyoya is secretive, calculating, and highly intelligent, and is the third son of an extremely wealthy and influential family. His older brothers are also smart and intelligent, and have set the standards high both in academics and reputation.

The Three Ootori Brothers

The Three Ootori Brothers

Kyoya’s father is very strict and puts a lot of pressure on Kyoya not to stand under the shadow of his brothers’ achievements. He even goes so far as to say that the only way Kyoya will impress him is if he outshines his brothers in all aspects. Kyoya deeply desires to supersede his older siblings in order to make his father proud, but he also has respect for them, and will not disrupt their efforts in order to better his own situation. Hence, his life-canvas in a frame.

Below is a snippet taken from a scene in episode 24 of the anime.

Kyoya is immersed in his studies. His older sister, Fuyumi, lingers in his room, attempting to (unnecessarily) sort his piles of clothes back into their draws.

Fuyumi: Listen Kyoya. I know Dad’s really strict, and he puts a lot of pressure on you. But you’re different from our older brothers. Remember, he doesn’t expect as much from you, so it’s okay if you take it easy sometimes.

Kyoya: I know. I’ll never be successor to the Ootori family. I’m not like my older brothers. All they had to do was follow the path that had been promised to them–a path that keeps heading upward. It’s because I’m the third son that I can’t relax. I’ll surpass father’s expectations of me, and I will respect my brothers and never step on their toes in the process.

Kyoya drifts away into his own thoughts, picturing his life as though it really was a canvas.

*How can I demonstrate my abilities without exceeding the limits of being the third son? I have a daunting task. I must paint the perfect picture on a canvas that has already been placed inside a magnificent frame.*

Kyoya painting

Due to his standing, and the desire to please his father, Kyoya goes out of his way to make connections in all the right places and is very polite to those in power, or who are related to it. Generally, he appears egotistical and standoffish, and puts up a façade that he only helps others if there is something to gain. Then, by the request of his father, he ‘befriends’ the new transfer student (and sole heir to an exceptionally grand estate), Tamaki Suoh … and his whole world gets turned upside down.

Tamaki is flamboyant, whimsical, dramatic, changeable, unreservedly vain, and more often than not, quite idiotic (actually, sometimes idiotic is an understatment). In other words, the complete polar opposite to Kyoya.

(Tamaki decides that Kyoya is his BEST friend the first day they meet)

(Tamaki decides that Kyoya is his BEST friend the first day they meet)

Through the various trials of trying to accommodate Tamaki by very nearly bending over backwards to appease his curiosity and fulfil his requests, Kyoya is launched over the brink of his emotional indifference. His manifested frustration is probably the first time he’s visibly shown any raw passion.

I've never wanted to hit someone so badly in my entire life!!!

I’ve never wanted to hit someone so badly in my entire life!!!

And then, during an unexpected (and secretly unwelcomed) visit from Tamaki to his home, Kyoya comes face-to-face with an incredible revelation.

The following is also a snippet from a scene in episode 24 of the anime.

Tamaki: So, Kyoya, are you the successor to the Ootori family estate?

Kyoya: *Is this guy actually trying to pick a fight with me?!* (Outwardly retains his calm countenance) There’s no way that’ll happen. My brothers–they’re the first in line. I’m sure I’ll just end up working for them some day.

Tamaki: Really? That’s a surprise. Maybe I’m wrong, but I get the feeling you want more than that. I mean, when I look in your eyes I can tell you’re not happy with your situation. I’m surprised you’d give up so easily.

Kyoya: (Finding it increasingly difficult to rein in his irritation) This has nothing to do with whether I’m giving up or not. It’s just the way things are. You wouldn’t understand because you’ll be successor to your family’s estate without having to lift a finger.

Tamaki: It’s not certain I’ll be the Suoh family successor. My grandmother doesn’t like me. So if things stay the way they are now, then I’m not the heir. I’m not anything. …

Tamaki then proceeds to say he’s actually not that interested in inheriting his father’s business. He feels he’s too good-looking to let his features go to waste, and also begins to babble about starting an animal reserve instead. By now, basically every button of Kyoya’s has been pushed, and he can’t stand it anymore. In his anger he upturns the coffee table and launches himself onto Tamaki.

Kyoya snapping

Kyoya: Shut up, Tamaki! Do you expect me to believe that crap?! How can you possibly give up on being your family’s successor so easily? You have no idea what it’s like for me. You actually have a chance at it–all you have to do is try! Take advantage of your fortunate circumstances. Don’t you realise the position that you’ve been blessed with?! I can’t believe you. (He realises from Tamaki’s earlier observation, that he’s seen right through his façade of being content within his framed canvas) Damn it! Who the hell are you?!

*You’re such an idiot! How can you see through me?*

Tamaki: Hold on. It sounds to me like you’re the one who isn’t trying. If you really want to surpass your brothers, then you can do it. But I think the one who’s given up here … is you.

But I think the one who's given up here ... is you.

But I think the one who’s given up here … is you.

The pin drops. The revelation hits. So does the irony. The truth is–framed canvas or not–the only one holding Kyoya back is Kyoya, himself. Kyoya laughs with a kind of weightless abandon. The barriers between them crumble down, and from that point on, theirs becomes a true friendship.

And something else happens, too. Kyoya understands that the frame is no longer the limit.

Tamaki: … So you’re finally showing your true colours.

Kyoya outside the frame 1

Kyoya outside the frame 2

Kyoya outside the frame5

So, if you feel like your canvas is already set inside a frame and you are unhappy about how that barrier is limiting you, I have good news. The frame will bar you only as much as you allow it. There are no limits to what you can do and be, if you want it bad enough. Your greatest desire determines your outcome.

Dream big. Dream true. What colours your canvas can only be done by you.

A Fa’Luffy Review! Moonshadow: Eye of the Beast

When you spot the letters F A L U F F Y, you know it’s that time again. Time for another of that fluffaliciously round, red, cushion-eating dragon’s reviews!

It’s been a while, but the Fa’Luffy is back, and eager to share his opinions on all that entertains and delights (at least as far as books, movies, and games go).

For this Review, it was required that a book be picked out for scrutinising, and Fa’Luffy has chosen a very cool one! Not only is the story packed with action, intrigue and ninjas, but the author himself is equally as interesting – having worked as disc jockey, laboratory assistant, police officer, and even a monster in a side-show ghost train! He also holds extensive knowledge of Asian culture and traditional combat arts, and from this passion and learning has come the fantastic Middle Grade historical fantasy series: Moonshadow.

Which brings us to today’s review!

Today, Fa’Luffy will review: Moonshadow: Eye of the Beast

MoonshadowFA.indd

Publisher: Random House

Target Audience: MG (ages 9+)

Genre: Historical Fantasy

Medium: Available in Hardcover, Paperback, and eBook

Q: What’s it all about?

Fa’Luffy: It’s the dawn of an age of peace in medieval Japan, and a power-hungry warlord is plotting to plunge the nation into a deadly civil war using a secret weapon from the West. The Grey Light Order, a covert brotherhood of shinobi (ninja spy warriors) are tasked to stop this plot to protect the hard-won peace. For his first mission, the Grey Light Order’s youngest agent, Moonshadow, is sent on a perilous journey to capture the plans for the secret weapon.

Secret allies. Advanced sword skills. Unique powers. And courage. Does Moonshadow have what it takes to stop the re-igniting of civil war?

Well, you need to read it to find out! And if you’re pretty sure the hero wins out in the end, read it to find out how!

Q: Who would enjoy this?

Fa’Luffy: Those who like an easy, but interesting read. Those who enjoy intrigue and action. And those who can’t get enough of ninja coolness!

Q: What are some of your favourite aspects?

Fa’Luffy: Moonsahdow is a flufftastic main character. He’s brave, skilled, and honourable; a really great figure for young boys to look up to. The story is really cool! There’s stealth missions, secret plots, and awesome swordfights. Moonshadow’s Eye of the Beast ability is awesome (the ability to link your mind with a creature, and use its senses). Plus, there’s a young, talented, and smart female ninja that girl readers will love, so it’s a win-win for both genders. Oh, and there’s an awesome cat in it!

A neat little Teaser Trailer!

Q: What are some of your less favourite aspects?

Fa’Luffy: It’s a little slow to start off with, so that may be a struggle for the more hesitant readers. Some of the terminologies and names may confuse younger readers (but there is a glossary at the back of the book, so check it out!). Really, there’s not much to fault about this book. It’s perfect for it’s target audience, and is even a neat bit of entertainment for older readers.

Q: How would you sum up your opinion?

Fa’Luffy: A great adventure with fast-paced action, awesome ninja characters, and a story founded on fascinating, historical facts flavoured with some neat fantasy elements. For those who enjoy an easy, interesting adventure, you’ll not regret giving Moonshadow: Eye of the Beast as go. And what’s even better is that it’s the first in a series! Books two and three are available as well. So if you enjoy the first book, be sure to check out the others.

Fa’Luffy: Out of a total of 5 Fa’Luffy Stars:

Q: So the Fa’Luffy stamp for Moonsahdow: Eye of the Beast is …?

Fa’Luffy:

Fa'Luffy Dragon 3.2 (1024x1015)

So there you have it, Fa’Luffy Review readers! The round, red, cushion-eating dragon has spoken. Moonshadow: Eye of the Beast is approved! So if you like ninjas, and enjoy a fun, adventurous story with secret plots, deadly assassins, and cats, then Moonshadow is a noteworthy candidate to add to your personal library.

Book Review: Kin Seeker by N.R. Eccles-Smith

To all my fellow dragon-seekers! I have, once again, had the wonderful privilege of being in correspondence with a dedicated book-lover and fantasy addict (aptly named High Fantasy Addict), who was eager and gracious enough to read and review copy of my book, KIN SEEKER. And I am very pleased to say that she very much enjoyed it! Seeing positive reviews of my book always brings a sense of elation, but it’s always that little bit extra special when the compliments come from a stranger who loves the genre of my book, and has likely read hundreds of stories that have some or similar elements to mine. And now, without further ramblings, I am proud to re-blog High Fantasy Addict’s Book Review of KIN SEEKER (which received a fantastic 8/10 Missing Dragons)!

Book One of Dragon Calling

Published 2013 by Starsea Press

Greetings Brave Adventurers,

If you know me, you’d know that I’m a sucker for a good dragon novel. And when I learned that this novel’s main protagonist was a dragon, I simply had to read it. I was not disappointed.

This is a delightful and enjoyable tale that follows the journey of an endearing little dragon who awakens to find all his memories gone, and all his kin missing. What follows is part mystery and part quest, and the writing and developed world was reminiscent of works like Narnia, and The Last Unicorn. Although classified MG, this is a tale that can be enjoyed by all ages.

In his search for his family, ‘Little Dragon’ meets a number of other mythical characters, which range from magical to comic to downright terrifying – satyrs, giants, centaurs, and a beautiful if…

2014 – Do, and not merely Dream

“But it’s not who you are underneath, it’s what you do that defines you.” – Batman Begins

Here we are: at the final point of farewell to 2013, and ready to welcome 2014 with eager anticipation!

If you haven’t already done so, take a few moments to glance back one last time and reflect upon the days that have come and gone; the time you had available to you in 2013, and how you used it.

Consider all the things you accomplished; the relationships you made richer, and the people whose lives you touched in one way or another; the goals you reached, or began the journey toward completing; the successes you’ve had, whether small or big, and the successes you helped others attain.

Certainly, there have been difficult times. Challenges with finances, or relationships, or lifestyle changes; the loss of good health, or business ventures, or loved ones. Life continues to happen all around us, and sometimes we get hit hard, or unjustly. But the best thing to do with our pains or misfortunes is not dwell on them for too long, or carry them over with us into the new year. Let our struggles refine us, not define us.

This transition into a new year is, once again, a chance to start afresh in whatever area of your life you acknowledge needs refreshing. It’s a great time to hone in on goals and plans and strategies, and get the ball rolling again (or keep the momentum going). It’s also a good time to let go of things you know will only drag you down or stagnate your progress. Easier said than done, of course, but remember – the thoughts and feelings you feed, are the ones that will rule you. Better to feed your hopes than your fears, right?

So let’s make 2014 – the year of the horse (a creature symbolic of cheer, perceptiveness, popularity and increase) – one where the thoughts that lead our charge are the ones of positivity, determination and high spirits!

animal-clouds-hdr-horse-majestic-photo-Favim_com-39116

None of us can predict what this year will hold. We can’t even boast of knowing the outcome of tomorrow. But what we do have is the here and now – and the choices we make in these moments will always shape the days yet to come. So shape them well; let our dream be the compass, and our day-to-day pursuits the trail we blaze.

Do, and not merely dream.

It’s not every year I choose a “theme song” to inspire me for the year outstretched before me. But for 2014 I have found one that fits perfectly with where I am at, both as a writer, and as an individual navigating the intertwining paths of this journey called Life.

My Theme Song for 2014 is: Shine Your Way – performed by Owl City and Yuna

Are you someone who likes to pick out songs, sayings, or quotes to be a part of your personal mantra for each new year? If so, what’s yours for 2014? If you’ve never thought about doing something like that before, why not give it a go! You may find that having a theme song or saying is the perfect addition to your keeping inspiration and encouragement on track in making 2014 the best year yet!

Ho Ho Ho! A Merry Fluffalicious Christmas!

Ho Ho Ho! A Merry Fluffalicious Christmas!

For Fa’Luffy’s Christmas Special, Fa’Luffy went to the effort to pre-book his ticket to see the advanced screening of this particular movie. Now, while it has already been released in some countries (US, Russia, UK, Ireland and France – just to name a few), it has yet to be released here in Australia (and Denmark, Sweden, South Korea, Japan along with a host of others are still waiting, too).

And that movie is none other than Disney’s new critically acclaimed – FROZEN!

So today, FROZEN is exactly what Fa’Luffy will be reviewing (without SPOILERS):

frozen 4

Studio: Walt Disney Animation Studios

Medium: Current Cinema Release

Rated: PG for Parental Guidance

Genre: Fairytale

Q: What’s it all about?

Fa’Luffy: When the kingdom of Arendelle is cast under a curse of eternal winter, princess Anna, fearless and brimming with optimism, teams up with mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer Sven on an epic (and very musical!) journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell.

Fantastic cast of Characters!

Fantastic cast of Characters!

Q: Who would enjoy this?

Fa’Luffy: Anyone who loves stories full of humour and heart, anyone who loves musicals, and anyone who loves Disney’s traditional classic animations (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid).

Q: What are some of your favourite aspects?

Fa’Luffy: The animation is amazing, right down to the tiniest of details. The cast of characters are ones you can easily love. The music and songs are wonderful. The snow looks so real I want to jump on in and make snow cushions! Oh, and the Norwegian names are awesome! Sven, Kristoff, Olaf, Hans, Elsa – how could you not like such flufftastic names!

SVEN is like the BEST name ever for a reindeer!

SVEN is like the BEST name ever for a reindeer!

Q: What are some of your less favourite aspects?

Fa’Luffy: Very hard to pick out anything I didn’t like. It was a delight from start to finish. One thing to mention, though, is FROZEN’S strength does not lie in it’s plot, but in it’s characters and their motivations.

Q: How would you sum up your opinion?

Fa’Luffy: Full of heart, humour and music – everything that made the Disney classics so timeless. For the generations who grew up with the timeless classics of The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid, this movie will fill you with nostalgia, and rekindle your love of musical animations. FROZEN is definitely a classic for this new generation!

A Fa’Luffy Review: Ni No Kuni – Wrath of the White Witch

YOU KNOW IT’S COMING! With his cushion-cravings abated, the big, red, fluffy dragon is ready to dish out his next Fa’Luffy Review!

Fa'luffy photo 2 (1024x768)

This time around, Fa’Luffy had a few items lined up for review, but had a little trouble deciding which to choose. I made it easy for him by informing him this review needed to be of a game, lest he ruin his (unnecessary) order of entertainment mediums (Game, Movie, Book – in that apparent order).

So, without further ado, it’s time to reveal Fa’Luffy’s chosen review item: A unique and masterfully created Role-Playing game from the reputable game developer Level-5, and the legendary Studio Ghibli.

Today, Fa’Lufy will review: Ni No Kuni – Wrath of the White Witch

NiNoKuni

Publisher: Level 5 and Namco Bandai

Developer: Level 5 and Studio Ghibli

Platform: Play Station 3

Rated: PG for Parental Guidance/ E for Everyone

Genre: Role-Playing

Q: What’s it all about?

Fa’Luffy: A young boy named Oliver journeys to a beautiful and dangerous parallel world in an attempt to save his mother (this description does not do the game justice at all).

Oliver our brave and loveable Protagonist

Oliver our brave and loveable Protagonist

Q: Who would enjoy this?

Fa’Luffy: Anyone who loves to play traditional JRPGs, anyone who loves solid, in-depth story-telling, and anyone who loves the style and influence of the legendary Studio Ghibli. It’s like a blend of Pokémon and the Tales games, with the highlighted flavour of Ghibli.

Q: What are some of your favourite aspects?

Fa’Luffy: The in-game graphics look like brightly-coloured and beautifully detailed scenes, straight out of an animation. The characters are unique and loveable (like plushie cushions). The music was crafted by Joe Hisaishi and performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (need I say more). You help people who are ‘heart-broken’, by restoring pieces of their heart (courage, kindness, belief, curiosity etc) You can capture nearly every monster in the game, and use them to fight on your behalf. The story has Studio Ghibli smothered all over it (like the cushiest of cushions) – INCLUDING animated cut-scenes done in Ghibli’s well-loved style.

Just look at these beautiful graphics!

Just look at these beautiful graphics!

Q: What are some of your less favourite aspects?

Fa’Luffy: The usual ‘level grinding’ a gamer needs to do in an RPG – although it’s nowhere near as bad in Ni No Kuni, as it is in other games. It can be difficult to find and capture certain creatures (usually because certain kinds don’t spawn often enough). Everything else about the game is gold!

Q: How would you sum up your opinion?

Fa’Luffy: Eye-dazzling and heart-warming with a story that will enchant, music that will inspire, and a style of gameplay that perfects the traditions of JRPGs. My gaming compadre bought her PS3 for this game – it’s that good!

And the Word Is…

“But words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling like dew, upon a thought, produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.”
– George Gordon Byron

We all know the power of words. Whether written or spoken, words have shaped the hearts, minds, cultures, and creeds of mankind across all the histories of the world. They are the expression of our souls; a bridge that can connect and unite, as well as a poison that can kill more cruelly than any mortal weapon; a vast array of thoughts turned into imprints; a palette of a hundred thousand different colours; strange, ugly, beautiful, powerful, and entertaining.

FiftyWordsOne

And a writer’s purpose is to face off against this multi-faceted behemoth called the Written Word, and painstakingly mould from it a smaller, leaner beast, from which the rest of the world can better examine and, with some hope, admire.

But that is when words are brought together to create stories. What about words on their own? And now you may be wondering “well, what about them?”, to which I reply with: words can be just as strange, ugly, beautiful, powerful, and entertaining on their own, without conjoined together to form a description or explanation.

There are thousands of interesting words out there. I find myself discovering new ones all the time. I have some personal favourites, for various reasons, and I also have ones that I dislike, to various degrees. The relationship we, as individuals, have with words can be likened to the relationship we have with food; each enjoys and appreciates the flavours and textures of food differently.

Here are some of my personal favourites (either because I love the sound of the word, or the meaning, or both!):

Here are some of my least favourites (either because I dislike the sound, the meaning, or because of personal feelings I’ve attached to the words):

Doora moveable, usually solid, barrier for opening and closing an entranceway

Thoughts on Thankfulness

“The world has enough beautiful mountains and meadows, spectacular skies and serene lakes.  It has enough lush forests, flowered fields and sandy beaches.  It has plenty of stars and the promise of a new sunrise and sunset every day.  What the world needs more of is people to appreciate and enjoy it.” – Michael Josephson

It’s coming up to that time of year again. No, I’m not talking about the Christmas holiday season (although that is closing in on us like a freight train with no brakes)–I’m talking about Thanksgiving.

Bask in the colours of Thanksgiving!

Bask in the colours of Thanksgiving!

For many, a purposeful celebration of Thanksgiving doesn’t happen. We don’t celebrate it here in Australia, and a lot of other countries don’t have a celebratory event centred on what it is to be thankful. For those that do (Germany’s Erntedankfest, Japan’s Labour Thanksgiving Day, and of course North America’s Thanksgiving days), it presents an opportunity to shift from the everyday diversions of life, and spend a time focused on food, family, and thankfulness.

Thankfulness is a very important quality to have, and one we really shouldn’t just think about once a year. With so much tragedy and misfortune in the world today, it’s easy to focus on the less pleasant things riddled through our lives. Too often, the good things we share, experience, own or divulge in are underrated–made deceivingly insignificant under the shadows of negativity slithering around us. We allow those shadows to lengthen and hold precedence far too often, when in reality, there is so much to be thankful for.

Do you have a car? Be thankful for that, and realise what a privilege it is. Do you live in a house? Be thankful. There are millions who don’t because they can’t afford it, or have just lost it in a natural disaster. Are you healthy? That is something to be truly thankful for. There are others who would give almost anything to have their health restored.

Be thankful if you can eat food every day; if you have clothes to wear; if you were/ are able to go to school; if you have a job, if you can read, if you own a TV, a phone, a computer; and if you have family and friends who care for you. As you can imagine the list can go on and on. Even if you have only some of those things, and not others, what you do have is still something to be thankful for.

Our thankfulness should dominate our outlook. If it doesn’t maybe it’s time to work on changing that. You only get to live once. Wasting your time on regrets, insecurities, negativities, disillusionment, unforgiveness, and resentment is just that–a waste. Better to take what you have, make the most of it, and work toward improving the possibilities of tomorrow, than brooding on your inner torments, or constantly  looking over your shoulder into the past, and tripping over from one day to the next, as a result.

A great story to remember is the ‘Old Cherokee Tale of Two Wolves’:

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’
The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’

So let’s look ahead at the coming days with thankfulness. Let’s pause and draw in from the here and now. Be present. Be thankful for the time you have right in this moment. What you dwell on and think about the most will shape your world. So, shape it deliberately, and shape it well.

“Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.” – W. T. Purkiser
